$17,000 for Nanaimo Arts Organizations
Vancouver, BC: 2010 Legacies Now is awarding
$5,000 to Theatre BC and $12,000 to the Vancouver Island Arts Festivals
Society as part of its commitment to strengthen the arts and cultural sector
in British Columbia.
“Arts and culture are a vital part of the life and health of a community,”
said Lori Baxter, director of Arts Now for 2010 Legacies Now. “This
funding will help these organizations promote creativity, innovation and
community pride through their artistic work.”
The funding is part of an investment of $430,000 in 52 arts organizations
in 23 communities across the province. Today’s announcement brings
2010 Legacies Now’s overall investment in the arts to more than $2.5
million.
2010 Legacies Now encourages and supports creative activities through its
Catalyst and Innovations programs. Catalyst helps arts, cultural and heritage
organizations enhance their artistic and administrative strengths, while
Innovations helps these groups create new opportunities for community members
to engage in arts and cultural activities.
“Our government supports a vibrant and sustainable arts and cultural
sector, and this funding will help arts organizations reach more people
in their communities,” said Stan Hagen, Minister of Tourism, Sport
and the Arts. “Arts and culture make our communities stronger by providing
economic opportunities, helping people make social connections and encouraging
all of us to learn more about the world we live in.”
“As a former board member for the Port Theatre, I am very pleased
to announce $17,000 for these two worthy organizations based in Nanaimo,”
said Nanaimo-Parksville MLA Ron Cantelon. “The health and vitality
of our arts and culture groups is a measure of our success as a community.”
“Arts and culture help us celebrate who we are and the things that
make our community unique,” said Camela Tang, chair of the Nanaimo
Spirit of BC Community Committee. “With this support from 2010 Legacies
Now, our arts and cultural sector will continue to grow and benefit everyone
in the community for years to come.”
“Theatre BC is very excited to be creating a new provincial-level
theatre event to celebrate our 75th Anniversary Season,” said Robb
Mowbray, executive director of Theatre BC. “2010 Legacies Now’s
investment in Actoberfest, a live-theatre fringe festival that will play
in a different B.C. community each year, should pay dividends for cultural
development around our province for many years to come.”
2010 Legacies Now is working to increase community engagement in creative
activities, improve the arts and culture sector’s economic base and
organizational capacity, and strengthen the sector’s ability to achieve
artistic excellence. Assistance is provided through contribution programs
and targeted activities developed in consultation with the arts and culture
community.
2010 Legacies Now is a not-for-profit society that works in partnership
with community organizations, non-government organizations (NGOs), the private
