Beijing Games on the Olympic Live Site in Downtown Nanaimo
Team Nanaimo hosted a public to viewing of the Beijing Olympic Games Opening Ceremonies at the Olympic Live Site in downtown Nanaimo on Friday morning. Over 100 people came by the plaza to enjoy the festivities.
“We are very pleased with how the event turned out,” Camela Tang, Chair Team Nanaimo. “To have such a mixed crowd of all ages, backgrounds and interests was great. It’s really a testament to what the games are all about- bringing people from different cultures to celebrate the wonder of the human spirit. We look forward to hosting the public viewing of the Opening Ceremonies of Winter Olympics in eighteen months time.”
Team Nanaimo is comprised of Nanaimo residents from an array of backgrounds and varied interests. The unifying belief of the team is each individual’s commitment to, and enthusiasm for, our community. They share a belief that the Games have the potential to impact the entire province of British Columbia positively. The team is committed to ensuring this impact is realized to its fullest potential. The group strives to welcome, explore, and nurture the possibilities presented to the community.
With 331 Canadian athletes participating in the Beijing Olympic Games we’ll have plenty of opportunity to cheer on our fellow Canadians. Some central island athletes to watch for include: Tony Theriault, Para-Rower; Mike Masson, High Jump; Michelle Stillwell, Wheelchair Racing; Trevor Hirschfield, Wheelchair Rugby and Travis Cross, Wrestling.
The City of Nanaimo will broadcast CBC coverage on the Olympic Live Site located in Diana Krall Plaza. Program times are scheduled for 6am to 9am daily and 3pm and 11pm. There will be some exceptions for the duration for the Blues Festival.
